Depending on the country, a vignette comes in one of two forms: a physical adhesive sticker you affix to your windscreen, or a digital registration linked to your license plate in an official database. Both must be purchased before you enter the motorway — either online, at a border crossing, or at a petrol station — and each is valid for a fixed time period, from a single day up to a full year.

Check Your Destination Country

Choose the Right Validity Period

Buy your vignette online via the country's official government portal, at a border petrol station, post office, or designated sales point. Always retain your proof of purchase — a receipt or confirmation email — in case of a roadside check.
Display or Verify Your Vignette
Physical sticker vignettes must be affixed to the inside of your windscreen in the position specified by local law — usually the lower-left or upper-right corner. For digital vignettes, your licence plate is registered in the national database — no sticker needed, but do verify the registration was successful before driving.

Physical vs. Digital Vignettes
European countries use two distinct vignette systems. Knowing the difference before you travel saves time at the border — and avoids unnecessary fines.
Physical Vignette
A physical vignette is a self-adhesive sticker that must be affixed permanently to your vehicle's windscreen. Removal or transfer to another vehicle invalidates it immediately.
How to Apply It
- 1Purchase at petrol stations, border shops, or post offices near entry points.
- 2Clean the windscreen area — typically the lower-left inside corner — with a dry cloth.
- 3Peel the backing and press the sticker firmly onto the glass from the inside.
- 4Do not place it on wipers, plastic trim, or frame edges — it must sit on glass.
- 5Keep the receipt as proof of purchase during the validity period.
⚠ Important Warning
Physical vignettes are destroyed when removed. Attempting to reuse or transfer them between vehicles is illegal and results in an on-the-spot fine.
Digital Vignette
A digital vignette links your vehicle's license plate to the national toll database. No sticker. Enforcement cameras automatically read plates at motorway entry points.
How to Purchase It
- 1Visit the official national portal or an authorised reseller (e.g. ASFINAG for Austria).
- 2Enter your vehicle's license plate number and country of registration exactly.
- 3Select validity period — 10-day, monthly, or annual options depending on the country.
- 4Pay securely by card. The registration is activated instantly or at midnight of your chosen start date.
- 5Save the confirmation email as proof. You do not need to print or display anything.
⚠ Plate Entry Is Critical
A single character error in your plate number means the vignette won't be detected. Double-check before completing payment — corrections can be costly.
